Avengers Villains Preview

Here is the first of what I hope to be a series of preview articles for upcoming Team Books. Each article will look at two character builds from the next Team Book. I’ll try to cast the spotlight on iconic characters or characters with mechanics that I find interesting or innovative. Where appropriate I will give Taliesin the credit they deserve and provide links to their original posts.

As you have probably noticed by now my Team Books have been concentrating on Marvel’s premier superhero team, their villainous counterparts, and their supporting cast: the Avengers. Up next are probably the Avengers’ most dangerous foes. Each enemy serving their own agenda and needing the combined force of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to halt their nefarious ploys. One such foe to terrorize the Earth is the Lord of Limbo, Kang the Conqueror! The mysterious 40th century villain known as Kang is driven only by the total conquest of the universe across all timelines. Armed with a vast array of futuristic gadgets, weapons, vehicles, and time travel technology Kang is a formidable opponent for any of the Avengers. Time travel has its drawbacks unfortunately and Kang is just as likely to find his plans stopped by a displaced version of himself as he is by the heroes. Without further ado here is the man himself:

Here are Taliesin’s design notes.

Design Notes: I built Kang as a combination battlesuit and gadgeteer. He has a slew of typical powers built into his armor. In addition, he can call upon any weapon from throughout the timestream with a snap of his fingers. The devices produced by this power are individually Removable, but the power to do so is not, so I’ve not applied this modifier. Kang’s power level assumes the use of these devices.

Kang’s point total doesn’t account for his nearly unlimited resources (except as indicated by Wealth) and minions (usually robotic armies).”

One such servant of the Conqueror is the enigmatic Space Phantom. Following the orders of Immortus, the Space Phantom uses its bizarre power to become and individual to infiltrate a planet and sow confusion and discord in preparation for an ultimate invasion. Here is his profile:

Power Points

Complications
Motivation–Loyalty: Immortus.
Weakness: Attempting to banish and mimic a powerful being like a god causes the Space Phantom to be banished to Limbo himself.

Design Notes. The Space Phantom is a powerful mimic with a twist. His power set allows him to function as if it were Possession or Mind Switch, but has the added benefit of removing its target from the scene. When using Transform Self the Space Phantom effectively becomes the target being mimicked, taking on their appearance and copying all of their traits. He does suffer from a shockingly vague weakness, exemplified by the attempt to transform into Thor in his first appearance.

Transform Self only serves to mimic target’s successfully affected by Temporal Banishment. The target of this power must pass a DC 24 Will resistance check or be banished to the Limbo dimension, a vast and desolate plain of existence. On subsequent rounds the effect is Resistible by Will and a successful check to overcome the effect returns the victim to their home reality and ends the Space Phantom’s Transform Self power.

A number of builds in this series use the Dimensional Banishment power template and it may appear that they have been costed oddly. This is because the character pays full points cost for the initial Dimensional Travel Movement effect up to the ranks they require. After that additional ranks do not allow the character to banish targets to additional dimensions and as such come with the Flaw: Limited to Resistance Checks only. I’ve tried to avoid writing this out each time to avoid clutter.
