Champions Preview

Welcome back to another Team Book preview, this time for one of Marvel’s most contemporary teams, the Champions. A youthful team inspired by the Avengers in many ways, founded upon a common disillusionment with their idols. The team contains members whose power sets mimic those of classic Avengers and other Marvel heroes. To capture the sense of legacy inherent to this team, where appropriate, each character was built using an existing character as a template. Most characters have some additional powers, or changes to their Skills, other traits, and Complications. One such legacy character is Miles Morales. Miles carries one of the greatest legacies in the Marvel Universe and has done since the day he took on the mantle of Spider-Man. Here he is:

Complications
Quirk: Originally from Earth-1610.
Responsibility: Comes with great power.

Real Name: Miles Morales

Design Notes: Miles adds some new powers to Peter’s already formidable power set. His webbing is bio-electric meaning that it is no longer removable and unreliable. His control over his personal bio-electricity affords him a new affliction to help stun his enemies. Miles has uncontrollable precognitive flashes and it is suspected that his Spider-Sense is greater than Peter’s. To further add to his versatility, Miles possesses the ability to turn invisible, provided he isn’t moving too fast.

Although more experienced than the rest of his team, Miles is still at a relatively early stage of his superhero career and as such is missing some of the Advantages and Skills that Peter shows. Miles also sports a Quirk that many of my builds exhibit. He is originally from an alternate universe and this quirk might cause him to act oddly, be missing knowledge about popular and current affairs, or to battle with existing relationships with characters when encountering their 616 counterparts.

Whilst researching the Champions team I came across a character that I was only vaguely aware of, but became intrigued by. Gwendolyn Poole leapt from the cover of a comic book into the Marvel universe. Originally intended to be a piece of variant artwork, Gwenpool captured the imagination of the fan base. I must confess that I haven’t read any book in which Gwenpool appeared but here is my take on the character.

Complications
Quirk: Sees the world as a comic book.

Real Name: Gwendolyn Poole

Design Notes: Gwen takes Deadpool’s ability to break the Fourth Wall and dials it up to eleven. She appears to have awareness and control over the medium in which she is represented. It is this power that determines Gwen’s Power Level. Through use of her array she can step between the panels of the comic book and reappear at a new location. By moving backwards or forwards through the pages of her book she can view her past and future and even travel to those panels. She can use this ability to force others into this Gutter Space dimension. Alter Narrative reflects her ability to make changes to the personality of other characters. With it she could change a target’s motivations from noble to villainous or remove the minion status from a character, although these alterations are usually short-lived.
